Surfoly, our innovative project committed to addressing core issues at the Water-Food-Energy Nexus in the Mediterranean area and MENA regions, attended the Leaders Event on Accelerating Water and Climate Action at COP28 in Dubai, UAE. The event brought together global leaders, including among others, Ursula Von Der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States and John Kerry, Special US Presidential Envoy for Climate, and witnessed pivotal discussions on climate change mitigation.
Empowering Climate Action
Surfoly recognizes the pivotal role of circular economy models in mitigating climate change. At COP28, discussions have delved into various approaches, highlighting the urgency to address the interconnected challenges of water, food, and energy. The event, following the landmark UN 2023 Water Conference, emphasizes the importance of resilient water systems in climate adaptation and mitigation solutions.
Clean Water Production: Surfoly's Business Model
One of the key focuses of Surfoly's business model is the production of clean water from olive mill wastewaters. Through innovative cleaning processes involving biochar derived from olive residues, Surfoly is contributing to sustainable water management and reinforcing the circular economy. This approach aligns with the overarching goal of building resilient water systems as a critical lever for effective climate action.
Acknowledging Global Commitments
Surfoly applauds the significant pledges made at COP28, among others to triple renewable energy capacity and initiatives on methane and coal power and future ones to come. However, Surfoly acknowledges that these are voluntary side deals, that have recently proliferated, as did extreme weather events, because unlike official summit decisions, they must not pass by consensus among the nearly 200 countries.
In conclusion, Surfoly is looking forward to the signature of a strong and effective Dubai Agreement. It’s presence at COP28 signifies our commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions at the intersection of water, food, and energy. As we navigate the challenges presented by climate change, our business model stands as a beacon for clean water production and circular economy practices. Stay tuned for more updates on Surfoly's journey towards a resilient and sustainable future.
